Writing Groups

Everyone is a writer. You are a writer. All over the world, in every
culture, human beings have carved into stone, written on parchment,
birch bark, or scraps of paper, and sealed into letters—their
words…Creating with words is our continuing passion. We dream
stories; we make up stories, poems, song…
~Pat Schneider

Empty Bowl Writers™ writing groups aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but
they may be right for you. Founder and facilitator Ali Lichtenstein
has been leading groups in Vermont and New Hampshire for over ten
years. Using the Amherst Writers and Artists ™ methodology developed
by Pat Schneider, MFA, she creates a supportive, encouraging
environment for both novice and experienced writers of all genres.

The ancient and enduring concept of the “empty bowl” has varied
meanings. In these writing groups it symbolizes the writer’s desire
to enter into a writing practice with an open mind, willingly
entertaining all subjects, ideas, and forms that may arise during
spontaneous writing exercises.

Small groups of six to eight writers meet weekly for two hours.
During this time, creative writing prompts are provided and writers
have complete freedom to write from the heart and soul in any
direction desired. Writing may be shared with the group as fresh,
first drafts, but this is not a requirement of the writing group.
Over the course of six to ten weeks writers are encouraged by the
facilitator and each other.

All workshops will be held at 382 West Street, Keene, NH 03431

Every person is born into life as a blank page—and every person
leaves life as a full book. Our lives are our story, and our story
is our life. Story is the narrative thread of our experience—not
what literally happens, but what we make of what happens, what we
tell each other and what we remember.

Life hangs on a narrative thread. This thread is a braid of stories
that inform us about who we are, and where we come from, and where
we might go. The thread is slender but strong; we trust it to hold
us and allow us to swing over the edge of the known into the future
we dream in words.
Christina Baldwin, Storycatcher

A writer is someone who writes. You have done it; you have expressed
yourself on paper. Getting started [writing] is almost always
getting started again..."So what do you need? You need to discover
and respect your own rituals and habits so that they will assist
you..."

and With Others

Story is the foundation of relationship. With words alone we can
create connection, establish community. With words alone we can
recognize ourselves in each other's lives.
